Restaurant Spotlight: Chicago’s Home of Chicken and Waffles

In honor of Black History Month, we’re shining a light on some of our favorite Black-owned restaurants. First up is Chicago’s Home of Chicken and Waffles. With locations in Bronzeville and Oak Park, this classic soul food restaurant has earned its spot on Eater Chicago’s list of best chicken and waffles in the city.

While owner Darnell Johnson is originally from New York, his wife Tonya Johnson is from Chicago. After they married, they opened up Chicago’s Home of Chicken and Waffles in 2008. “At the time, chicken and waffles weren’t that big in Chicago yet so we thought it would be a great concept to bring over,” Darnell said. “My children were raised on chicken and waffles.”

The many media tributes they’ve received.

So what can you expect when dining in or taking out Chicago’s Home of Chicken and Waffles? “Our mission is to simply serve a quality meal,” Darnell explained proudly. “We want everyone to know they can get a wholesome meal that tastes just like Grandma’s cooking.”

Chicago’s Home of Chicken and Waffles joined the All Day family in early 2021. “The entire relationship has been a great experience from the beginning. I’m older so anytime I get an opportunity to partner with young, ambitious people who know what they’re doing, I’m excited,” Darnell said.

As for the future? Darnell has big plans in mind, hoping to open at least 30 full service signature restaurants and upwards of 100+ express spots.
